A kápolna Brenner János rábakethelyi káplán emlékére épült 1995 és 1996 között. A tiszta lelkű, becsületes és Isten ügyét hűségesen szolgáló fiatal pap a plébániájához tartozó településeken nagy elismerésnek örvendett. Mindenki szerette és tisztelte kortól és nemtől függetlenül.
Balszerencséjére szolgálatait az egyházra nézve az egyik legkritikusabb időszakban végezte. A kommunista rendszer nem nézte jó szemmel munkásságát, ezért megpróbálták áthelyezni más plébániára. A püspök kiállt a fiatal káplán mellett, s nem intézkedett menesztéséről. Ettől kezdve folyamatosan fenyegetettségnek volt kitéve, ami hamar utol is érte. 1957. december 14-éről 15-ére virradó éjjelén hazugsággal csalták el Zsidára az ifjú káplánt, aki kötelességének eleget téve azonnal segíteni indult az állítólagos beteghez. Útja közben ismeretlen elkövetők támadtak rá, ahonnan még el tudott menekülni János atya, ám a hamis címre érve már vártak rá, és brutális kegyetlenséggel, 32 szúrással késelték halálra.
Az eset kivizsgálása a rendszernek köszönhetően semmitmondó volt, a káplán ügyét megemlíteni a rendszerváltásig nem is lehetett. Az első hivatalos megemlékezés 1992. december 13-án volt, ekkor egy emlékkeresztet állítottak halála helyszínén. Három évvel később a kápolna építése is megkezdődött a Brenner János Emlékhely Alapítványnak köszönhetően, 1996 nyarán pedig a felszentelés is megtörtént. A szombathelyi egyházmegye 1999-ben indította el Brenner János boldoggá avatását, ami 2018-ban meg is történt.
Az épület környezete parkosított, kellemes pihenőhelyként is szolgál.

Public transport
- A városba vonattal és távolsági vagy helyközi buszokkal is érkezhetünk. A vonatról a Szentgotthárd állomás/Bahnhof (elökert/Vorplatz) megállónál, a buszokról a Szentgotthárd, autóbusz-állomás megállóban kell leszállni.
- Az állomásról a helyi busszal a Szentgotthárd (Zsida), Zsidai utca megállóig utazzunk.
