Úgy tartják, 1038-ban I. Bélát Csák fia, György erről a helyről kísérte Lengyelországba. 1188-ban az épület és a birtok Csák Ugrin győri püspöké volt, aki végül itt is halt meg 1204-ben. Miután Csák Máté vereséget szenvedett a rozgonyi csatában, az erődítmény a király birtokába került; később a Rozgonyiaké és a Török családé is volt.
Székesfehérvár eleste után, 1543-ban a törökök felégették a környéket, így a várat is. Építőköveit a helyiek később széthordták. Érdekesség, hogy a Csákok címerállatának emlékét ma a közeli Oroszlány település neve is őrzi.
