A várat elsőként egy 1389-ből származó dokumentumban említik. 1462-ben Zentgourgh néven vették számba, 1663-ban pedig már Szentgyörgyvárként hivatkoztak rá. Annyit tudunk, hogy 1671-ben Nádasdy Ferenc birtokában állt. A 19. században Natz József azt írja, az épület 8x8 méteres volt, de már akkor is csupán az alapzatok földhányásai árulkodtak erről.
1901-ben a Műemlékek Országos Bizottsága várromként lajstromozta, de azóta sajnos még inkább az enyészeté lett. Ma már a turistatérképeken sem szerepel.
Ha nem tudunk róla, talán el is sétálunk mellette, mert jóformán csak egy dombot látunk. A leírások alapján tudjuk, hogy a kb. 12x25 méteres kiemelkedés nyugati felén felfedezhetők két kis helyiség kiásott kőfalai, a keleti részen pedig feltehetően az alapfalakra utalhat két kisebb mélyedés. Árkok, sáncok és külső védőművek nem láthatóak.

- Ha Gánt és Kőhányáspuszta között a K jelzésen túrázunk, Mindszentpusztánál forduljunk a K◼-re a Szentgyörgyvári erdészházig. A térkép nem jelöli konkrétan a romot, ami a közeli Templom-dombon található. Sem út, sem ösvény nem vezet fel a pár méter magas földnyelvre.
