01 Northern Alpine Trail, E29 (alpine): Lofer - Schmidt-Zabierow Hut - Straubinger House
This stage is divided into two days with overnight stays in St. Ulrich am Pillersee (optionally it can also be split into three days with overnight stays at the Schmidt-Zabierow Hut and in Waidring). It leads through high alpine terrain in the rugged Loferer Steinberge!
Attention: the alpine route from Lofer to Straubinger House (unlike the main trail 01A over the Loferer Alm) takes two days - for clarity reasons the two days are presented together here. The easier A-variant can be found here.
Day 1
From Lofer we follow the road southwest, cross the bypass road, follow a footpath along the Exenbach, reach the road leading into the Lofer high valley and pass a military camp where the road ends short after in the valley end. A steep climb brings us to the Scheffauer Alm (ruined). Our path continues in many switchbacks steeply over terrain steps through the lower and middle Tret to the widely visible Schmidt-Zabierow Hut (1,963 m, managed from late June to early October, no winter room).
For safety reasons (risk of falling rocks) the path from the Schmidt-Zabierow Hut to Waidring in the Loferer Steinberge was relocated by DAV Passau. From the hut one now goes west over the Wehrgrubenjoch to Weißleiten and St. Ulrich am Pillersee. Note: At the Schmidt-Zabierow Hut the "old" route with 601 is still indicated, but instead the path 613 to St. Ulrich should be followed - some maps still show the dangerous path over the Waidringer Nieder.
Day 2
From St. Ulrich on the Way of St. James north to Waidring (778 m). We leave it at its west end on the toll road leading to the Steinplatte (1,376 m). The onward way leads north immediately to the Bavarian border into slightly higher krummholz terrain. After crossing under two small elevations we soon reach the spacious Eggenalm with the day's goal, the Straubinger House (1,558 m, managed from early May to early November, winter room with AV lock).
