Albsteig (HW1) – Stage 3 – Mönchsdeggingen to Bopfingen
Schwäbische Alb
After the short stage the day before, the first big challenge now awaits. The path leads nearly 27 kilometers, alternating between forest paths and narrow trails, to Bopfingen. At Schweindorf, a wildlife enclosure is crossed, and with a bit of luck, you can spot deer and other wildlife. For hikers with dogs, a detour is signposted. Afterwards, there are repeated views of the Ries, the Bopfinger Ipf, and Baldern Castle. The stage destination is then also Bopfingen, an old imperial city with a beautiful center and a landmark visible from afar, the witness mountain Ipf.
Author’s recommendation
“It is worth exploring the diverse landscape of the Swabian Ostalb on foot. When you then climb the Ipf in Bopfingen, you have a wonderful view into the unique Ries landscape.”
Susanne Dambacher, Managing Director of the Tourism Association Erlebnisregion Schwäbische Ostalb

Gasthof Zum BärenSafety information
This is a moderately difficult mid-mountain hike, the ascents are partly steep and the trails quite narrow. Experienced hikers will therefore enjoy it more and find it more pleasurable than beginners in hiking. Experience and endurance and the appropriate equipment are prerequisites. The Albsteig (HW1) was completely re-signed in 2016 and re-certified as a quality trail in 2020. A hiking map and/or a GPS device can never hurt as a supplement.Tips and suggestions
