Albsteig (HW1) – Stage 4 – Bopfingen to Aalen-Unterkochen
Schwäbische Alb
On the stage between Bopfingen and Aalen-Unterkochen, two hydrological highlights of the Albsteig are passed: the Eger spring and the source of the Kocher. Right at the beginning of the stage, there is a longer ascent before the route goes downhill towards the Schenkenstein ruins. Afterwards, you hike past the Jewish cemetery into the village of Aufhausen. Then you pass the idyllic Eger spring and move along forest paths towards Kapfenburg Castle, which you can glimpse repeatedly. Over a longer wooded section, you reach the source of the Kocher, whose bubbling sound is hardly to be overlooked. The stage destination Aalen-Unterkochen is not far from here.

Safety information
This is a medium-difficulty mountain range hike with partly steep ascents and fairly narrow paths. Experienced hikers will therefore have more joy and enjoyment here than beginners in hiking. Experience, endurance, and the appropriate equipment are prerequisites. The Albsteig (HW1) was completely re-signed in 2016 and re-certified as a quality trail in 2020. Additionally, a hiking map and/or a GPS device will never hurt.Tips and suggestions
