Riffe im Ries. Die Geotope Kühstein liegen am südlichen Kraterrand unmittelbar am Ortsrand von Mönchsdeggingen. Hier bieten zwei Steinbrüche Einblicke in die erdgeschichtliche Vergangenheit der Region:

Die Geotope Kühstein liegen am südlichen Kraterrand unmittelbar am Ortsrand von Mönchsdeggingen. Hier bieten zwei Steinbrüche Einblicke in die erdgeschichtliche Vergangenheit der Region: Wir blicken auf Relikte eines 160 Millionen Jahre alten Riffgürtels und auf Reste eines Mündungsdeltas des Rieskrater-Sees.

Obwohl die am Kühstein freiliegende Weisjurakalk-Scholle während der Kraterbildung mit den benachbarten Schollen in den Krater glitt und dabei teilweise mechanisch stark beansprucht wurde, sind insbesondere die oberen Abschnitte des Aufschlusses gut erhalten. Der Abschnitt des Riffes, der am Kühsteinfelsen sichtbar ist, gehörte zu dem sogenannten Ries-Wiesent-Riffzug, der im Jurameer die Region der Fränkischen Alb durchzog.

Ein weiteres geologisches Highlight bietet der Steinbruch Mönchsdeggingen nahe der ehemaligen Gemeindeschäferei. Es handelt sich bei dem Aufschluss um die Sedimente eines ehemaligen Flussdeltas. Hier mündete ein Zufluss in den ehemaligen Rieskrater-See. Die Schichtabfolge im Gesteinsprofil erzählt von den klimatischen Gegebenheiten zu der Zeit nach dem Ries-Ereignis, die von zunehmenden jahreszeitlichen Niederschlagen geprägt waren. Mit der Starke der Strömung änderte sich auch die Ablagerung und der Grad der Zementierung in den Sedimenten, was die Abfolge der verschiedenen Schichten erklärt.

Auf einem 2,7 km langen Lehrpfad erklären acht Ereignistafeln die Phänomene der Geotope und biologische sowie historische Besonderheiten. Am Buchberg eröffnet sich ein großartiges Panorama auf das Ries und seinen Inneren und Äußeren Kraterrand.
