Albsteig (HW1) – Stage 2 – Harburg to Mönchsdeggingen
Schwäbische Alb
Region: Swabian Alb
The second stage is the shortest Albsteig day route. It leads for 12 kilometers from Harburg to Mönchsdeggingen.
We recommend: Visit Harburg Castle in the morning on a guided tour. It is one of the largest, oldest, and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. After a refreshment at the castle tavern, you can start your hike. After leaving the town of Harburg behind, you hike along the Bockberg nature reserve. The path then leads through the forest all the way to Mönchsdeggingen, where the impressive monastery already greets you at the town entrance.
Author’s recommendation
"Arriving in Mönchsdeggingen, a contemplative visit to the former monastery church and a sweeping view from the viewpoint over the Ries up to the northern crater edge let this impressive hiking day come to a close."

This is a moderate mid-mountain hike, with some steep ascents and rather narrow paths. Experienced hikers will therefore have more joy and pleasure here than beginners in hiking. Experience, endurance, and appropriate equipment are prerequisites. The Albsteig (HW1) was completely re-signed in 2016 and again certified as a quality path in 2020. Additionally, a hiking map and/or GPS device never hurt.
