Die Schrammsteine und die benachbarten Affensteine bilden das eigentliche Zentrum des Elbsandsteingebirges. Man unterscheidet die Vorderen und die Hinteren Schrammsteine, in ersteren finden sich über 60 Kletterfelsen. Der Begriff "Schramm"steine wurde schlicht von den mehr oder weniger häufigen Schürfwunden der Wanderer abgeleitet.
