Der Rabenstein und die Königsnase am gegenüberliegenden Flussufer zeugen vom Durchbruch der Mulde vor 160.000 – 130.000 Jahren. Am Ende der Saale-Kaltzeit bahnte sich der Fluss, bis dato noch nach Westen ausweichend, einen Weg durch das harte vulkanische Festgestein. Seitdem fließt er von Grimma nach Norden weiter. Der Rabenstein ist auch unter dem Namen Trompeterfelsen bekannt. Laut einer Überlieferung sprang hier im Dreißigjährigen Krieg ein Trompeter ins Wasser, um seinen Feinden zu entkommen.
