Naturally, from Donnersberg (687 m), the highest mountain in the Palatinate, there is a magnificent view. All the more so when you have climbed the 142 steps of the octagonal and 26.9 m high stone tower. It was built in 1864, inaugurated in 1865, and after damage in the last war, it was renovated in 1952/53 at considerable expense. The tower is named after King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
Since 1971, the Ludwig Tower has been protected as a historical monument and is overseen by the Donnersberg Association.
In the northwest, you can easily spot the district town of Kirchheimbolanden and the A 63, which runs around Donnersberg further towards Winnweiler in the southwest. To the right of Kirchheimbolanden, you can see the ruins of the former railway bridge at Marnheim. While you can see a large part of the Northern Palatinate Uplands from the north to the west, the view from the southwest to the southeast extends far into the Palatinate Forest. On a clear day, you can also see all the way to the Black Forest and the Vosges. Finally, in the distance to the southeast lies the Rhine Valley. By the way: The transmission tower of Südwestfunk (207 m) is located in the west, and the binoculars on the observation platform are to the north.
The Ludwig Tower is currently closed due to renovation work.
How to reach the tower?
Take the A 63 between Kirchheimbolanden and Kaiserslautern and take the exit Göllheim/Dreisen/Dannenfels. Via Weitersweiler and Bennhausen, you will reach Dannenfels. There, the "Donnersberg" signage will guide you directly to the parking lot on the mountain. From there, you will reach the tower in just a few minutes.
