Kő orra lookout takes a short detour off the Blue Trail but the stunning view over the Tapolca Basin is worth the effort.

Kő orra represents the typical hills of Balaton Uplands with vineyards and holiday houses at the bottom, grassy slopes in the middle and groves at the top.

What makes it worth a visit is the unobstructed view over the lake and island-like buttes that scatter the Tapolca Basin.

Looking at the closest ones, e.g. Badacsony or Szt. György-hegy their peak indicates the former surface level of the area and their height shows how much the basin has eroded. Volcanic activity in the area was characterized by basalt lava flows.  Basalt lava has a low viscosity, due to its low silica content, resulting in rapid lava flows that can spread over great areas before cooling and solidification. The solid lava forms a protective shield that resists erosion thereby maintaining and demonstrating surface level (Hungarian for “butte” is “tanúhegy” meaning “witness hill”).

Public transport

  • Get off at bus stop “Lesencefalu, szőlőhegy” at the junction of the Blue (K) Trail and the paved road.
  • The closest stop in inhabited area is “Lesenceistvánd, autóbusz-váróterem”.
  • Optionally, get off in Vállus and hike along the Blue (K) Trail to Alsó-Szőlőhegy/Kő orra.

Getting there

  • Take Blue▲ (K▲) spur trail to Kő orra. The lookout is on the upper edge of a clearance. Do not follow the old and worn-out markers as they misdirect.
  • From Lesenceistvánd follow the Blue (K) markers uphill to Kő orra (Total distance: 2.9 km, elevation gain: 240 m).
  • From Vállus head east along the Blue (K) Trail. As the trail crosses a paved road it continues uphill and keeps winding towards Kő orra. Past the last building you will arrive (Total distance: 4.1 km, elevation gain: 197 m).

  • Park your car at the junction of the paved road and the Blue (K) Trail or near Lesenceistvánd and Vállus along the trail.
