Kő orra (Rock’s Nose) lookout
Kő orra represents the typical hills of Balaton Uplands with vineyards and holiday houses at the bottom, grassy slopes in the middle and groves at the top.
What makes it worth a visit is the unobstructed view over the lake and island-like buttes that scatter the Tapolca Basin.
Looking at the closest ones, e.g. Badacsony or Szt. György-hegy their peak indicates the former surface level of the area and their height shows how much the basin has eroded. Volcanic activity in the area was characterized by basalt lava flows. Basalt lava has a low viscosity, due to its low silica content, resulting in rapid lava flows that can spread over great areas before cooling and solidification. The solid lava forms a protective shield that resists erosion thereby maintaining and demonstrating surface level (Hungarian for “butte” is “tanúhegy” meaning “witness hill”).
