Das Hochmoor Finsterauer Filz ist Lebensraum für Überlebenskünstler.

Hochmoore sind von besonderem Wert für den Klimaschutz als Kohlenstoffspeicher, für die Biodiversität als Lebensraum spezialisierter Arten wie Torfmoosen und Sonnentau sowie für den Wasserhaushalt als Speicher und Filter. In der Vergangenheit wurden Moorflächen häufig entwässert und aufgeforstet, um die Flächen nutzbar zu machen. Im Finsterauer Filz geschah dies vor allem in der Nachkriegszeit. Naturschutz- und Forstbehörden arbeiten seit 1990 gemeinsam daran, den Lebensraum Hochmoor wiederherzustellen. Zuletzt wurden 2015 Entwässerungsgräben mit Dämmen verschlossen, so dass der Torfkörper wieder vernässt. Das Finsterauer Filz gehört seit 2022 zum Nationalpark Bayerischer Wald und ist auf einem barrierearmen Bohlenweg erlebbar.
