The Jewish community in Mikulov was the 16th Century mining center of the Moravian Jews and the seat of the Moravian country mountain. After 1848, the Jewish community became a separate entity with its own mayor and other administrative bodies. In times of prosperity, around 3,500 Jews lived in Mikulov, serving twelve synagogues and prayers. The former Jewish quarter has preserved a number of houses dating from the mid-16th century and the synagogue itself.
The so-called Upper Synagogue was built 1550 and is the only preserved Jewish prayer room here. Originally a Renaissance building, rebuilt in the baroque style in an original space surrounded by a four-cup dome, its architectural design is unique. Represents the last preserved synagogue type in our country.
The Synagogue has recently been completely renovated and now there is an exhibition called Rabi Löw and Jewish Education in Moravia.
