The Samokov Synagogue was constructed between 1857 and 1860 during a period when Samokov had a thriving and well-established Jewish community. Built in the architectural style of the Bulgarian National Revival, it reflected the town’s prosperity and cultural diversity in the late Ottoman period. The synagogue served as a central place of worship and community life for Samokov’s Jewish population, which played an active role in the town’s commercial and cultural development at the time.
During the 20th century, political and social changes led to the gradual decline of the Jewish community in Samokov. Following the Second World War and the mass emigration of Bulgarian Jews in the late 1940s, the synagogue was abandoned and eventually fell into disuse. Although now in a deteriorated state, parts of its architectural structure, including decorative ceiling elements, still reflect its former significance. Today, it stands as a quiet but important monument to the Jewish heritage of Samokov and the broader multicultural history of the region.
