The Wildspitze rises majestically above the expanses of the Ötztal Alps, a true king among the peaks of North Tyrol. With its imposing height of 3768 metres above sea level, it is the second highest mountain in Austria, only just beaten by the legendary Grossglockner.
Its striking silhouette lies around 12 kilometres north-east of the main Alpine ridge in the Weißkamm, the impressive part of the Ötztal Alps that stretches from the Weißkugel to the north-east towards Sölden. The southern and eastern flanks of the Wildspitze rise above the picturesque Venter Tal valley, while its western and northern flanks form the majestic end of the Pitztal valley.
Two peaks crown the Wildspitze: the rocky south summit, whose height varies between 3768 and 3770 metres depending on the source, crowned by a proud summit cross, and the firny north summit, whose height has fallen slightly over the years and now stands at 3757 metres. The discussion about the exact height was once characterised by tourist interest and is evidence of the fascination that this mountain exerts on people.
The waters of the Taschachferner flow northwards down into the Pitztal valley, while in the south-west and south-east the Mitterkar and Rofenkarferner stretch their icy tongues into the Venter valley.
The Wildspitze not only impresses with its height, but also with its outstanding topographical position. With a peak height of 2266 metres, it ranks fourth in the Alps, surpassed only by Mont Blanc, the Grossglockner and the Finsteraarhorn. This extraordinary dominance stretches over 48.5 kilometres and makes the Wildspitze a true giant among the peaks.
The view from the Wildspitze is breathtaking. The view stretches from the Valais Alps in the west-south-west to the Schober group in the east, limited only by haze and the gentle curvature of the earth. A summit cross, originally erected in 1933 and later replaced by a new one, crowns the peak and symbolises the human urge to conquer and honour nature.
The Wildspitze is not only a destination for mountaineers in summer, but also attracts adventurers from all over the world in winter. Thanks to modern infrastructure such as the Pitztal glacier railway, it can now also be climbed as a day tour from the Pitztal valley, making its majestic summit a magnet for mountain lovers and adventurers at any time of year.
The history of the Wildspitze is characterised by courageous pioneers such as Leander Klotz, who first climbed the south summit in 1848 and was the first to scale the then higher north summit in 1861. Its routes, be it the normal route via the south-west ridge or alternative ascents such as the rocky south-east ridge or the steep north face, offer challenges for experienced mountaineers and unforgettable experiences for anyone who takes them on.
The Wildspitze is a symbol of the beauty and wildness of the Alps, an icon that has inspired and fascinated generations of adventurers and continues to make the heart of every mountaineer beat faster.
