About the most scenic ski route to the highest mountain in Tyrol

The Wildspitze is not only the highest mountain of the Ötztal Alps but also, after the Großglockner, the second highest mountain in Austria. Due to its exposed position, it is naturally an excellent viewpoint mountain. Despite the height and the impressive glaciation on the north side, it is technically relatively easy to climb. Therefore, this renowned summit is naturally part of the standard repertoire of every ski-mountaineer and almost every mountaineering school. Accordingly, the mountain is quite busy during the high season.
This is largely due to the quick access from the Pitztal Glacier ski area. With an ascent of just under 800 vertical meters, the Wildspitze is also accessible from there for tourers with less fitness, which obviously increases its attractiveness to an audience that you would not encounter there without this ascent aid. Nevertheless, Tyrol’s highest point is still a worthwhile target for individual mountaineers – provided they choose a route that largely avoids the crowds.
Besides the popular but quite gentle ascent from the Vernagthütte, the route described here from the Taschach valley is especially a rewarding alternative and probably the most scenic winter ascent to the Wildspitze. The nice winter room at the Taschachhaus is suitable for a multi-day stay, as many other interesting tour opportunities await besides the Wildspitze.

Hut approachFrom the car park a few meters west to an alpine road. Follow this southward up to the Taschachalm. From the alpine pasture slightly downhill to a bridge over the Taschachbach and on the left side of the stream (usually snowmobile track) fairly flat upstream to the material cable car of the Taschachhaus. Here turn right over a slope upwards behind the lateral moraine and ascend on the western slope of the moraine to the Taschachhaus. The winter house is the first, slightly projecting building.Ascent to the summitFrom the Taschachhaus slight descent westwards to the Sexegertenbach. Now stay in the valley bottom and ascend a bit westward until you can ascend left over the moraine to the northwesternmost foothills of the Pitztaler Urkund. Through a steep hollow in the left part of the Sexegertenferner we reach the flatter glacier basin south of the rocks of the Pitztaler Urkund and ascend eastward to the Urkundsattel. In a gentle right curve, continue slightly ascending
