The majestic Dachstein rises as the main peak of the Dachstein mountain range and presents itself in the striking shape of a double peak. With an imposing height of 2995 metres above sea level, the Hohe Dachstein is the highest peak in the entire mountain range and is also the highest point in the Austrian federal states of Upper Austria and Styria.
Directly to the north of the Hoher Dachstein is the Niederer Dachstein, which also towers impressively at 2934 metres and is 400 metres away from the main summit. These two peaks form a fascinating backdrop for mountaineers and nature lovers alike.
Since the 19th century, the Dachstein has been a popular destination for mountaineers attracted by its imposing height and natural beauty. Its reddish south faces of Dachstein limestone, which tower over 1 km high, are as famous as they are challenging. In the Northern Alps, the Dachstein is the second highest peak after the Parseierspitze in the Lechtal Alps.
The border between the federal states of Upper Austria and Styria runs across the Hohe Dachstein, while the Niedere Dachstein lies entirely in Upper Austria. The surroundings of the Dachstein are characterised by breathtaking beauty, with picturesque villages such as Hallstatt and Ramsau nearby.
The development of the Dachstein for tourism began in the 19th century, and since then numerous first ascents and significant events have characterised the history of the mountain. Friedrich Simony built the world's first via ferrata here in 1843 and also carried out the first winter ascent in 1847.
The region around the Dachstein, in particular Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, which emphasises the unique cultural and natural significance of this landscape. The north-western part of the municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein is a protected nature reserve that preserves the unspoilt beauty of the alpine landscape.
Due to its importance as the highest peak in the federal states of Upper Austria and Styria, the Dachstein attracts numerous mountaineers all year round. On days with good weather, there can be over 100 climbers on the routes to the summit at the same time, which can lead to longer waiting times on particularly challenging sections.
