Fluhenstein castle ruins - a once stately castle complex

Die Burgruine Fluhenstein, ehemals Burg der Heimenhofener, wurde im 14. Jahrhundert erbaut. Sie steht auf einer Felskuppe am Hang des „Walten“. Dieser Vorberg der Allgäuer Alpen befindet sich bei Berghofen, das der Stadt Sonthofen angehört. Aufgrund politischer Auseinandersetzungen ihrer Burgherren und ihrer strategisch ungünstigen Lage war die Burg Fluhenstein Schauplatz mehrerer Kämpfe, Besetzungen und Plünderungen.

Heute ist die ehemals stattliche Höhenburg in einem desolaten Zustand, der Zugang wurde wegen akuter Einsturzgefahr gesperrt. Der Wohnturm im Süden ragt noch beinahe in Originalhöhe auf, außerdem stehen im Norden und Westen noch größere Mauerteile, wobei die ca. 10 m hohe Nordfront des Nordflügels noch am besten erhalten ist.

Die Burgruine befindet sich in Privatbesitz.
