King Maximilian II undertook a journey in 1858 to get to know his kingdom better. He covered most of the distance by carriage or horse, but also climbed some summits on foot. The German Alpine Club opened the long-distance trail named after him in 1991, which roughly follows Maximilian's route. Most of the trail runs in Bavaria, but one connecting section is also in Austria. The start is in Lindau on Lake Constance, then it goes through the Bregenz Forest, the Allgäu and Ammergau Alps, the Bavarian Prealps, and the Chiemgau Alps to the Berchtesgaden Alps. The trail crosses a wonderful natural landscape with mountain peaks and lakes as well as fantastic views, but there are also some larger towns and cultural highlights along the way. Some castles like Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau can be admired en route. The trail is very demanding, leading over numerous summits, but there is always the option of an easier variant through the valley.
