The Hochobir delights its numerous visitors with a comprehensive view, the most beautiful being the view of the peaks of the Steiner Alps around the Grintovec and the long rock wall of the Koschuta. However, the Hochobir is truly famous for another reason: Our mountain remained glacier-free during the last ice age, allowing plants to survive on its slopes that we otherwise rarely or never find – a true paradise for botanists. But even the casual flower lover can enjoy the early summer here like rarely on any mountain. Because then the summit meadows are covered with such a densely planted, colorful carpet of flowers that you can hardly see the ground. Among the alpine cushion plants grow small orchids such as the rare Steiner-Alpen monk’s hood, the white Höswurz, or various types of marsh orchids, including a snow-white blooming subspecies. The Hochobir receives numerous visitors from the Eisenkappler Hut, which can be reached by car. The hut stands on a magnificent viewing balcony opposite the Steiner Alps. Previously, just below the summit, there was the Rainer Shelter; nowadays, only the ruins of the building burned down in 1944 remain. Originally, it was built as a miner’s shelter, since the Hochobir is an old mining area – lead ore was mined there for centuries. To avoid the rush on this popular mountain, we start our circular tour at the Schaidasattel and hike up the lonely Simon-Rieger Trail to the summit.
At Schaidasattel, first enjoy the magnificent view of the Koschuta rock wall before turning to the Simon-Rieger Trail. This begins steeply, initially parallel to a forest road, whose switchbacks we shortcut. Then it goes quite directly uphill through the forest to a ledge with a cross, 1670 m. Now the path becomes more comfortable and runs in an ascending traverse through the southeast flank of Kuhberg. Gradually, the forest thins, and we reach the Obir meadows. During the blooming season, it becomes increasingly colorful; initially, forget-me-nots, globe-flowers, and monk’s hood line our way, further up we find gentians, silver root, stemless campion, and yellow alpine poppy, with the sweet scent of stone roses above all. It is a beautiful and pleasant hike up to the cross-decorated Hochobir summit, where a flock of hungry jackdaws is already waiting for us. On the descent, we follow the wide gravel path over the long summit ridge, past the ruins of the former Rainer Shelter and the
