A Vörösmarty által „széplaki bús romként" említett templom szentélye ma is látogatható Tolna vármegyében.

A II. Géza korában épült, román stílusú templomromnak ma már csak a szentélye áll, benne egy halványan kivehető freskóval, előtte bádogkereszt függ. A szentély mellett piknikasztalok várják a kirándulókat, rossz idő esetén a vele szemben található, fedett házikó padjain is megpihenhetünk.

Az eredetileg nem Cikóhoz, hanem a krónikákban Máriaszéplak, illetve egyszerűen Széplak néven említett faluhoz tartozó, román stílusú templom sok pusztítást látott az elmúlt évszázadok során. A művészettörténészek először a ciszterciekhez kapcsolták a romot, ám valószínűbb, hogy a II. Géza által betelepített johanniták birtoka volt. Annyi bizonyos, hogy 1280-ban már említik a krónikák: az udvar akkori kincstárnoka végrendeletében a Nyulak szigetén (a mai Margit-szigeten) álló kolostorra hagyta birtokait, köztük Széplakot és Cikót – a kutatások szerint a templom akkor nagyjából százéves lehetett.

A Dombóvár–Bátaszék-vasútvonal mentén már messziről szembetűnő templomot és a valamikori Széplakot a törökök teljesen szétdúlták, később az elnéptelenedett völgybe német telepesek érkeztek, akik keserves munkával igyekeztek újra termővé varázsolni a tájat. Mivel saját templomuk sokáig nem volt, az Ótemplomhoz jártak imádkozni. 1721-es források szerint a 4,5 m x 5 m nagyságú szentély akkoriban még kiváló állapotban volt, és egészen 1946-ig, a svábok kitelepítéséig közismert búcsújáró helyként működött. Nagyboldogasszony napján (augusztus 15-én), Kisboldogasszony napján (szeptember 8-án) és több Mária-ünnepen, pl. virágáldáskor körmenetben érkeztek a hívek, hogy a szépen feldíszített szabadtéri oltárnál hallgassák a szentmisét.

Az Ótemplom romjai között a jáki temploméhoz hasonló, faragott, vésett köveket is találtak. A szentély falán halványan kivehetők egy régi freskó maradványai, előtte bádogkereszt függ. Napjainkban évente egyszer, szeptemberben tartanak itt szabadtéri misét.

A templomromról említést tesz Vörösmarty Mihály Széplak című versében (1828) és Illyés Gyula Kora tavasz című regényében is.

  • Akár Bonyhád, akár Cikó irányából érkezünk, a S ◼ jelzésen az aszfaltút és a sorompó találkozásánál letérünk az idecsatlakozó jelzetlen földútra. Ezt követjük egészen a romtemplomig (350 m, szintemelkedés nélkül).

Parking

  • A romtemplomnál a földút végén, az út mentén ingyenesen parkolhatunk, de az aszfaltút és a földút találkozásánál is hagyhatjuk a gépkocsit.
