The core piece of the Benedict pilgrimage route connects three federal states and three Benedictine centers – the monasteries of Admont, Seckau, and St. Paul. The very nature of the Benedict pilgrimage route shaped its motto: "From monastery to monastery". Already in 2011, the Benedict pilgrimage route was extended to Slovenia to the former Benedictine monastery of Gornji Grad.
Pilgrimage routes connect peoples, bringing together people of diverse origins and leading to the spiritual centers. Thus, the Benedict pilgrimage route is an important building block in the unification of Europe, entirely following the intention of St. Benedict, the patron saint of our continent.
The initiators are therefore carried by the vision of establishing a European pilgrimage route from Montecassino to Pluscarden in Scotland.
Within the framework of an EU-LEADER project, since 2020, the Benedict pilgrimage route in Upper Austria, from Passau to Spital am Pyhrn and vice versa, as well as a pilgrimage cycling route variant, is being established (completion planned by May 2023). Along the Danube almost up to its source and further to St. Blasien, one can - thanks to the consent of the operators - often use already existing hiking trails and for cycling pilgrims also cycling paths.
In Slovenia, from Gornji Grad to Miren (Görz) to the Italian border, the Benedict pilgrimage route is largely marked and the stages and route descriptions can be found here on Outdooractive. In Italy, the Benedict route runs on various well-marked and well-known pilgrimage routes thanks to partnerships with the respective operators up to Montecassino.
