Landau, the metropolis of the Palatinate region, is primarily known as a fortification and university city. It is also referred to as a garden city due to its spacious parks. The State Garden Show 2015 further emphasized this nickname, as the new South Park, covering about 15 hectares, was added on land formerly used by the French military. This continued a tradition that began in 1949 with the “Süwega.” The Southwest German Garden Show or Southwest German Horticultural Exhibition is considered the first garden show with supraregional impact after World War II. At that time, not only were new facilities created, but many were also extensively beautified.
So too was the Schiller Park, which stretches along the street “An 44.” Here, impressive one-and-a-half to three-story villas and residential houses with original wrought-iron fences of the front gardens line up next to each other. In this historic preservation area with typical townhouses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is worth taking a stroll through green Landau. Because here, the vibrant city center seamlessly transitions into an oasis of tranquility. The park, named in honor of and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller's death in 1905, is narrow yet about three hectares in size. It features a combination of baroque garden elements and the style of English landscape gardens.
For those wanting to extend their walk, the route from Schiller Park past the Strieffler House and through allotment gardens toward the district of Godramstein is recommended. There, shaggy Highlands cattle graze in the so-called Reiterwiesen by the Queich. They help to contain invasive plants such as Japanese knotweed and Indian balsam. What was introduced as an ornamental plant in the 19th century began to spread rapidly. This crowd out native plants typical of moist floodplain and shore areas. During the walk, one can experience live how four-legged landscape caretakers contribute to keeping Landau a green garden city.
