Der Frillensee gilt als kältester See Deutschlands und besitzt des Öfteren im November eine tragfähige Eisdecke. Der See und seine Umgebung stehen unter Landschaftsschutz, da sich am Nordufer ein Hochmoor mit einer vielfältigen Flora anschließt.
Das Eis friert nicht wie üblich vom Rand der Fläche zu, sondern von der Mitte her.
Der See ist nur zu Fuß erreichbar, vom Parkplatz am Forsthaus Adlgass. Von hier aus hat man ca. 45 min. Fußmarsch. Getränke und Essen sind selbst mitzubringen, da keine Einkehrmöglichkeit vorhanden ist.
