The arboretum has one of the oldest collections in the country. Its predecessor was established in 1546 to grow vegetables and fruits. The widely recognized garden survived for more than 100 years when it fell victim to adverse historical events. When its owner Earl Ferenc Nádasdy the 3rd as participant of the Wesselényi Conspiracy was arrested and beheaded for rebelling against Habsburg King Leopold I in 1671 the confiscated garden lacking professional care soon started to decay.
It was only year 1803 that brought a change when Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Austria-Este purchased the castle and the surrounding lands. He made tremendous efforts to revive the estate. He kept only a tiny part of the fruit garden and established an impressive English landscape garden in the greater part. A few of the trees planted that time are still there including plane trees with a diameter of over 3 meters.
Later it was Ludwig III of Bavaria who was enthused to continue the development obtaining the land through marriage with heiress Maria Theresa of Austria-Este. He reshaped the surrounding forests according to Bavarian forestry granting them a national reputation.
After WW2 management was taken over by the regional forest agency. In 1952 the park obtained a protected status and management was taken over by the Science Institute of Forestry.
Today the arboretum has two main units. One is the 200-year-old landscape park with old aged European yews, Japanese pagoda trees, plane trees, black pines and bully trees as well as a little younger magnolia trees. The other part is the remnant of the original wooded pasture and the groves stretching around the fishpond with 400 year-old oaks.

Public transport
- Accessible by bus or train. Get off at “Sárvár, Batthyány utca” or “Sárvár, kórház”.
Getting there
- Accessible from the railway station by bus (two stops). On foot, follow Blue+ (K+) markers. Head east along Selyemgyár Street and take the first right to Hunyadi János Street. Take the third left to Dózsa György Street and at the end turn right onto Deák Ferenc Street that joins Várkerület Street (Castle Ring). Turn left and in a few meters you will reach the entrance to the arboretum on the left (1.3 kms).
- Head east from bus stop “Batthyányi utca” along Batthyány Street. Cross Kossuth Street and go along Várkerület Street. Pass the parking lot of the castle and as the road curves right you will find the entrance to the arboretum the opposite side (30 Várkerület Street) (450 m).
- From the bus stop in front of the hospital head northwest along Rákóczi Ferenc Street that joins Várkerület Street. Entrance to the arboretum is on the right (500 m).
Parking
- Park the car either in the parking lot at Nádasdy Castle or the Lidl store nearby. Parking is free all around the town with a time limit of 1 hour.
