Der Jungfernsprung gehört zu den zahlreichen Buntsandsteinformationen, die für den Wasgau, den Südteil des Pfälzerwaldes, typisch sind. Weil die Gegend von Dahn besonders reich an solchen Gebilden ist, wird sie auch Dahner Felsenland genannt. Beim Jungfernsprung handelt es sich – wie bei den anderen Felsen der Region – um härteres Gestein, das der Erosion stärker widerstanden hat als das umgebende Material. Der Felsen tritt schroff und leicht treppenartig aus der Schräge der linken Flanke des Tales der Wieslauter, während Dahn sich im Südwesten des Felsens zu beiden Seiten von dessen Basis ausbreitet.
Eine Jungfrau soll sich auf der Flucht vor dem Raubritter Hans von Trapp von dem 70 Meter hohen Felsen hinab gestürzt und dies auf wundersame Weise unbeschadet überstanden haben. Angeblich sprudelt seit dem an der Stelle, wo ihr Fuß aufgekommen sein soll, eine Quelle. Der Jungfernsprung ist bei Kletterern beliebt und von der Bergseite erschlossen.
