The Historical Museum of Samokov presents the rich cultural and industrial history of the Samokov region from antiquity to the early 20th century. Its collections include Roman artefacts, Byzantine icons, traditional crafts, photography, and exhibits dedicated to the town’s renowned ironworking industry. The museum is one of the most important cultural institutions in southwestern Bulgaria and provides a detailed insight into the development of Samokov as a prosperous craft and industrial centre.
The Historical Museum of Samokov documents the long history of the region, beginning with Thracian settlement and continuing through Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Bulgarian periods. Archaeological finds displayed in the museum testify to ancient mining and metallurgical activity in the surrounding mountains, resources that later shaped the town’s identity. The name “Samokov” itself derives from the large water-powered mechanical hammers known as samokovi, which were used in iron production. The museum’s exhibition “Samokov – Spirit and Metal” explores this industrial heritage through models of iron-smelting furnaces and traditional forging equipment, illustrating how the town became one of Bulgaria’s most important centres for ironworking.

The museum also highlights Samokov’s flourishing cultural and craft traditions during the Bulgarian National Revival of the 19th century. Exhibits include textiles, goldsmithing tools, pottery, copper work, glassware, semi-precious stone processing, and traditional costumes from the Iskar region. Particularly notable are displays of early Bulgarian photography, imported European clocks, and finely embroidered garments reflecting the town’s growing prosperity and modernisation. A rare glass factory established in the mid-19th century with artisans from Karlsbad further demonstrates Samokov’s openness to European influences. Together, the collections provide a vivid portrait of a town that combined industry, craftsmanship, and cultural development. Sultans Trail travellers can also obtain a passport stamp at the museum.
