40,000 years ago, early modern humans not only developed new tool techniques, but also created animal and human figurines from mammoth ivory, which are the oldest known works of art known to mankind. One outstanding example, which is one of the most impressive exhibits in the Museum of Prehistory, is the "Venus of Hohle Fels". The almost 6 cm tall ivory figure was discovered in 2008 in the Hohler Fels karst cave near Schelklingen and, according to research, is between 31,000 and 35,000 years old.
In addition to Ice Age art, finds of musical instruments and a great wealth of Ice Age jewelry are evidence of modern man's new self-confidence.
The Prehistoric Museum Blaubeuren "urmu" is the central museum for this region. The globally unique works of art are presented thematically in treasure chambers. They open up a completely new approach to the mysterious art of the Ice Age. The museum is located in the historic hospital building, which was restored and renovated in 2014. The spatial expansion of the museum has also created space for event rooms.
