This museum tells one of the most exciting stories of evolution: The Earth had existed for thousands of millions of years until about 400,000,000 years ago when a green revolution laid the foundation for our life. Plants left the water and conquered the land. Dive into this distant world, as the Devonium playfully explains these complex interconnections of the science of fossil life (paleontology). In the age of the Devonian, Waxweiler was located in a river delta, comparable to today's Orinoco Delta in Venezuela. This sub-Devonian delta is the site of unique fossil plant discoveries by the Rebske family. The museum showcases the latest scientific findings about the fossils found at the Köppen quarry near Waxweiler and the depositional environments of the rock layers uncovered there.
If desired, you can go on a fossil hunt outside of Waxweiler by prior arrangement. Hammers are made available for loan from the guest house for this purpose.
NEW in the Devonium: Since April 2026, a approximately 2.60 m large giant sea scorpion Perygotus has expanded the exhibition at the Devonium. The giant sea scorpion was one of the largest predators of the Devonian sea and is an impressive symbol of prehistoric times.
