Ausstellung - Eisenstadt-Hauptstadt im Schatten des Eisernen Vorhangs
On April 30, 2025, Eisenstadt will celebrate 100 years as the capital of Burgenland. The new permanent exhibition in the Stadtvilla Eisenstadt highlights the turbulent history of the capital city with its unique location on the Iron Curtain. The development of the city is told from the perspective of the residents of Eisenstadt – as they are the ones who have made the capital what it is today: a thriving capital in the heart of Europe.
Due to Sopron's belonging to Hungary, Burgenland was without a capital for almost four years. In 1925, the decision was made in a contentious vote in the Burgenland state parliament that Eisenstadt would become the seat of the state government and parliament. This effectively made Eisenstadt the state capital of the still young federal state. The term “state capital” was only to be legally anchored decades later. The hope that Sopron might still be assigned to Burgenland was too great. The new state capital, which was largely agricultural, now faced the major challenge of creating the necessary infrastructure. The Great Depression, World War II, and Soviet occupation hampered development.&d:p>
Five fictional protagonists will take visitors on a journey through 100 years of the state capital Eisenstadt. They tell the turbulent history of the city from the perspective of its residents.&d:p>
The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the Stadtvilla.
