Largest private collection on pharmacy in Europe
The pharmacy museum in Schiltach emerged from the former Rats-Apotheke pharmacy on the market square, which was founded in 1837. It was closed as a pharmacy in 1985 and reopened as a museum in 1989, retaining its characteristic interior design. The pharmacy, which is worth seeing in itself with its Biedermeier-style burl wood furnishings and everything that goes with it, is complemented by insights into the working world of earlier generations of pharmacists in the laboratory and the medicine cellar. A combined distillation plant is particularly impressive. It conveys the enormous amount of work that used to be required in pharmacies to produce distillates, decoctions, infusions and extracts. It also shows the diverse and typical tools used to make pills, suppositories and ointments. The tools that were developed for processing medicinal herbs are also shown in their functions. In addition, showcases are used to present topics from the entire pharmaceutical sector: Collections of powder boxes or inhalation devices, travelling pharmacies in all sizes and configurations or even such exotic matters as a frame for correcting crooked noses are represented. Early attempts to advertise all these pharmaceutical items accompany their exhibition and illustrate their use. Topics such as the discovery of bacteria and the impact of this discovery on the pharmaceutical field of pharmacists are explored in greater depth in special exhibitions.
Groups can visit the museum all year round by prior arrangement (07836-360 or 07836-1514).
