The Bayrakli Mosque in Samokov is a well-preserved Ottoman-era mosque built around 1845 and later restored in 1966. It is notable for its compact architectural form, wooden structural elements, and interior fresco decorations uncovered during restoration. Today, it stands as the only surviving mosque out of the many that once existed in the town.
The Bayrakli Mosque, also known locally as the Yokush Mosque, was constructed around 1845 during the late Ottoman period, most likely under the order of local authority Mehmed Husref Pasha. Samokov at that time was an important regional town with a diverse religious and cultural population, and the mosque formed part of a wider urban landscape that once included multiple Islamic places of worship. The building follows a relatively modest design, with a rectangular prayer hall measuring approximately 14 by 14.5 metres, supported internally by wooden columns and topped with a dome. A single tall minaret stands beside the structure, marking its presence within the town centre.

The interior of the mosque originally featured floral frescoes, which were later covered and then rediscovered during restoration work in 1966. These decorative elements are associated with the broader Samokov artistic tradition, known for its skilled painters and craftsmen during the 19th century. The women’s prayer area is located on a balcony level within the hall. Local legends suggest symbolic architectural elements reflecting a mixed religious heritage, though these are not historically verified. Following the political changes after Bulgarian independence in 1878, the mosque survived while many others in Samokov were lost, making it an important remaining example of Ottoman religious architecture in the region.
