A reminder of the once 13 distilleries on the sunny southern slope of the Schurwald. Today, the tradition lives on in just a few businesses.
The Diegelsberg still bears the popular name "Schnapsbuckel" today - a reference to the rich distilling tradition of the 19th century. The sunny south-facing slope on the edge of the Schurwald forest offered ideal conditions for fruit growing, and numerous distilleries settled here. Around 1850, there were as many as 13 distilleries processing fruit into fine brandies and shaping the town's reputation.
The distillery monument is a reminder of this special time, when distilling was not only a craft but also an important source of income for the residents. Until well into the 20th century, fruit processing in the form of distillation remained an integral part of regional culture.
This tradition is still carried on today in a few businesses, including the Dreher distillery, one of the last active distilleries on the Schnapsbuckel. It keeps the old knowledge alive with craftsmanship and passion and continues to produce high-proof specialties.
The monument makes history visible and pays tribute to the importance of the distillery trade for the region. Together with the surrounding orchards that characterize the landscape, the Schnapsbuckel is a place where the past and present of rural culture come together.
