Geistliches Zentrum der Au war ihre Kapelle. Der ortsansässige Maurermeister Wolf König erbaute sie 1630/31 nach Plänen des bedeutenden Münchner Hofmaurermeisters Isaak Bader. Erst im Jahr 1671, also 40 Jahre nach ihrer Fertigstellung, wurde die Salinenkapelle – der bedeutendste Sakralbau der Stadt Traunstein – dem Salzheiligen Rupert und dem Namenspatron Herzog Maximilian (ab 1623 Kurfürst), dem Gründer der Saline, geweiht.
