The Radovanjski Lug Memorial Complex marks the place where Karađorđe Petrović, founder of modern Serbia and leader of the First Serbian Uprising, was assassinated in 1817. The site is one of the most important memorial locations connected to Serbian national history and has been protected as a Historic Landmark of Exceptional Importance since 1979. Today, it preserves the memory of Karađorđe’s death and original burial place in a quiet woodland setting.
Radovanjski Lug is historically significant as the site of the assassination of Karađorđe Petrović, the leader of the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule between 1804 and 1813. After several years in exile, Karađorđe secretly returned to Serbia in 1817, hoping to re-enter political life. He sought refuge in the village of Radovanje under the protection of his godfather, Vujica Vulićević, unaware that a conspiracy had been organised under the authority of Prince Miloš Obrenović, who feared that Karađorđe’s return threatened his own political position. On 13 July 1817 according to the old calendar (26 July in the modern calendar), Karađorđe was murdered in the forest of Radovanjski Lug.

Following the assassination, Karađorđe’s head was severed and sent to Constantinople as proof of his death to the Ottoman Sultan, while his body was buried beneath an oak tree marked with a carved cross. Over the following decades, his remains were moved several times before eventually being transferred to Church of St George in Oplenac, the mausoleum of the Karađorđević dynasty. The original burial site in Radovanjski Lug was commemorated in 1845 and today features a memorial marked by a marble plaque, a large wooden cross, and an iron fence. Surrounded by woodland, the complex remains an important place of remembrance connected to the turbulent beginnings of modern Serbian statehood.
