Die ehemalige spektakuläre Festung der Stadt bestimmt auch heute noch den sechseckigen Grundriss der Innenstadt.
In Saarlouis ist die Vergangenheit auf Schritt und Tritt lebendig. So erinnern viele steinerne Zeugen an den Gründer der Stadt, Ludwig XIV. und seinen berühmten Baumeister Vauban.
Die Festung „Sarre-Louis“ wurde ab 1680 auf Veranlassung Ludwig XIV. zur Sicherung der besetzten lothringischen Gebiete errichtet. Auf der Grundlage der Pläne von Thomas de Choisy und des großen Baumeisters Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban entstand eine fast regelmäßige Festungsanlage mit sechs Bastionen.
Die strenge geometrische Anlage der Festung und der innerhalb ihrer Mauern entstehenden Stadt ist das Ergebnis einer Verbindung militärisch-technischer Überlegungen und den architektonischen Idealvorstellungen der Barockzeit einer ästhetisch schönen und funktionalen Stadt.
