The Nunnery Convent Pokrov is an Orthodox monastic complex in Samokov with origins in the 18th and 19th centuries. Founded by local benefactor “Grandma Fota”, it developed as a spiritual and educational centre for women, including a girls’ school. The convent remains an important religious site and a representative example of Samokov’s Revival-era ecclesiastical architecture.
The Pokrov Nunnery Convent is part of the rich Orthodox monastic tradition of Samokov, an important religious and cultural centre during the Bulgarian National Revival period. The complex developed in the 18th and 19th centuries on the site of an earlier Hilandar-associated nunnery and is traditionally linked to its founder, known locally as Grandma Fota. Over time, it evolved into a functioning convent that combined spiritual life with education and social support activities. In 1872, the nunnery was formally recorded in ecclesiastical chronicles, reflecting its established role within the Orthodox community of the region.

The convent church, consecrated in 1839, contains icons painted by notable Samokov artists, including scenes such as the “Holy Virgin – Protector”, which reflects local devotional traditions. The nuns historically supported themselves through textile production, including spinning and weaving, which was common among Bulgarian monastic communities of the period. The convent also operated a girls’ school, contributing to education in the town. According to local belief, the feast day of the Holy Virgin’s Mantle (1 October) symbolises divine protection over Samokov. The site is also associated with relics of St Sava of Serbia, further highlighting its broader Orthodox significance.
