Koporin Monastery is a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery and active convent located near Velika Plana. Built during the reign of Despot Stefan Lazarević in the late 14th or early 15th century, it is particularly significant as the burial place of the Serbian ruler. Surrounded by greenery and gardens, the monastery is valued for both its spiritual atmosphere and its preserved medieval frescoes.
The exact founding date of Koporin Monastery remains uncertain, although the monastery church dedicated to Saint Stephen was constructed during the reign of Stefan Lazarević, who ruled between 1389 and 1427. Stefan Lazarević, one of the most important figures of late medieval Serbia, received the title of Despot after the Battle of Ankara in 1402. His portrait survives within the church frescoes alongside the inscription “Despot”, and he is traditionally believed to be buried within the monastery complex. Architecturally, the church reflects the Morava school style characteristic of late medieval Serbian religious architecture, with stone decoration, elegant proportions, and richly painted interiors.

Over the centuries, the monastery suffered periods of decline and damage, eventually falling into serious disrepair before restoration efforts began in the late 19th century. Further conservation work was carried out during the 1950s and 1960s, focusing on both the architectural structure and the preservation of fresco paintings. Today, Koporin functions as an active convent for nuns and is recognised as a Monument of Culture of Great Importance in Serbia. Its peaceful grounds, flower-filled gardens, and historical significance continue to attract pilgrims, historians, and visitors interested in medieval Serbian heritage.
