Dorf an der Werra in Westthüringen, Ortsteil von Eisenach

Der Ort Göringen liegt romantisch am Ufer der Werra und am Fuße des 317 m hohen Göringer Steins. Die Entstehung des Ortes fällt in die erste Siedlungsperiode im 4. und 5. Jahrhundert.

Im Mittelalter diente das Dorf zur Versorgung der nahen Brandenburg. Den ältesten belegbaren Baubefund am Platz der heutigen Kirche im Ortszentrum konnte man dendrochronologisch auf die Zeit 1058 – 1072 datieren, das älteste gefundene Mauerwerk zwischen 1180 und 1240. Im 15. Jahrhundert wurde die Kirche renoviert oder umgebaut, im Inneren wurde eine Bilderserie mit religiösen Motiven auf dem Verputz aufgemalt, nach dem Bildersturm im 16. Jahrhundert wurden diese Fresken übertüncht. Der Ort war im Besitz der Herren von Herda und von Reckrodt, die auch in den Nachbarorten ansässig waren.

Das vorhandene Kupfererz am Nordhang des Göringer Steins wurde durch einen Bergbauschacht erschlossen, das Erz wurde wahrscheinlich in der nahen Neuenhofer Schmelzhütte verarbeitet. Eine Blütezeit hatte der Stollen im Göringer Stein in den 1850er Jahren und wurde bis 1906 betrieben

Erst um 1840 wurde die Ortsverbindungsstraße nach Neuenhof und Lauchröden hergestellt, zuvor musste man stets beträchtliche Umwege oder die nicht ungefährliche Durchquerung der Werra in Kauf nehmen. Im Jahre 1870 zählte man 162 Einwohner in 30 Wohnhäusern (2008: 180 Einwohner).

Am 1. April 1945 beschoss die vorrückende US Army den Ort, viele Gebäude und auch der Kirchturm wurden getroffen. Mit der deutschen Teilung wurde der Ort durch seine Lage unmittelbar an der innerdeutschen Grenze weitgehend von der Außenwelt isoliert. An die einstigen Grenzbefestigungsanlagen erinnern das als jetzt Fußgängerbrücke genutzte Flusssperrwerk Göringen (1980-81 als Sperrgitter der Grenze zu Hessen im Fluss errichtet) und eine Gedenkplatte am Ortsrand.

Der Göringer Stein gilt als sagenumwobener Ort. Auf seinem Gipfel soll einst eine gleichnamige Burg gestanden haben. Der Burgberg der Brandenburg liegt nur 500 Meter in Richtung Lauchröden entfernt. Im Mittelalter lief an der Flanke des Berges eine Altstraße in Richtung Eisenach am Göringer Stein vorbei, deren Hohlwege noch gut als Gräben im Westhang erkennbar sind. Der Weg wurde von der Brandenburg kontrolliert. Auf dem Gipfel befindet sich eine freiliegende Felspartie, sie war als Ausflugsplatz beliebt. In einem Stein auf der Südseite wurden das Monogramm C A, die Jahreszahl 1878 und eine Krone eingehauen - es handelt sich um eine Ehrenbezeugung für den damaligen Landesvater, Großherzog Carl Alexander zum 25jährigen Regierungsjubiläum im Jahre 1878.

Göringen ist ein Ortsteil der Wartburgstadt Eisenach mit ihren vielen touristischen Angeboten, deren Stadtzentrum etwa 12 km entfernt ist.
