From the "Gateway to the Rennsteig" in Hörschel, you climb into the varied hilly landscape. Viewpoints tempt you with views of the Wartburg and as far as the Rhön. From the romantic Brandenburg castle ruin, we descend into the Werra valley and follow the riverbank back to the start of the Rennsteig.
We leave the parking lot on the outskirts of Hörschel, turn left onto the road (sign: Eisenach 9 km), cross the Hörsel, pass the restaurant "Gateway to the Rennsteig" and the church, and now follow the marking white "R" (for Rennsteig) for the time being. At the intersection, we follow the Rennsteig slightly to the left (sign: Vachaer Stein 7.7 km). The paved road turns into a gravel path that leads us out of the town. At the fork, we keep right and climb uphill through the forest. At the forest edge at the top, we continue straight ahead (sign: Gonnermannseck 0.5 km), passing a bench with a view of the Werra valley. Through deciduous trees and pastures, we reach the Gonnermannseck fork where we turn right (sign: Vachaer Stein 6.5 km). We pass a picnic bench and walk out of a forest section into the open fields. On the right, we look over the Werra valley, on the left the Wartburg greets us and on the Großer Eichelberg, 311 m, a shelter and a picnic bench with a beautiful view await us.
