Um das Gewässer rankt sich eine unheimliche Sage, die von einem Lindwurm im Tappenkarsee erzählt:
"In alten Zeiten stieg der Lindwurm Nacht für Nacht an die Oberfläche und holte sich unter Mensch und Vieh seine Opfer. Endlich taten sich ein paar mutige Burschen zusammen, nähten aus Rinderhaut den Popanz einer Kuh und füllten das Innere mit Pulver. Am Seeufer aufgestellt, lockte diese den Lindwurm tatsächlich aus der Tiefe des Sees. Hohe Wellen aufwerfend kroch das Untier an Land und verschlang den Köder. Ein entsetzlicher Knall zerriss die Luft und das Untier wälzte sich in seinem Blut, konnte sich jedoch zurück ins Wasser schleppen und war verschwunden. Seither nagt er an diesem Felsen, den See zum Kleinarltal hin begrenzt. Eines Tages wird er die Wand durchbrochen haben, und die Fluten des Tappenkarsees werden das Tal bis Wagrain hinaus überschwemmen."
