Reservoir of Fehérvárcsurgó
Gaja Creek is the largest water flow of East Bakony. Mining activities in the area called for establishing a reservoir in 1971-72 for seepage control. Archeological excavations found that even ancient Romans dammed Gaja in the 2nd century, probably to obtain drinking water and a bathing facility.
Today the lake is a beautiful holiday resort with holiday houses surrounded by rolling hills. It has an average depth of 6-8 meters and a maximum depth of 15 meters. Swimming is allowed at the northeastern tip.
Nowadays the primary function of the dam is to control floods, however, the reservoir contributes to drinking water supply and irrigation as well as it is a popular fishing spot (with a local record of an 80 kg catfish).
Previously the area was used as a cabbage field and 3 mill operated along this section of the creek. In the mid-2000s beavers set up home between the gorge and the lake.
Take a walk around the lake and check the barren hill near the dam for the view over the lake and surrounding hills. The Blue Trail passes by the lake along its southern shore and Becsali büfé there is a stamping location.
