The German section of the European long-distance hiking trail E1 is well signposted and runs across Germany – from Flensburg in the north to Konstanz in the south.

The European long-distance hiking trail E1 starts at the North Cape in Norway. Over a distance of about 7000 km, it then crosses Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland until it finally reaches Salerno through Italy. In the future, the trail is planned to continue to Sicily. On this route, the German section of the E1 from Flensburg to Konstanz is described. It is about 1900 km long and officially divided into 76 stages. The starting point for this multi-week and world-famous long-distance hiking adventure is in Flensburg, the northernmost city of the Federal Republic of Germany. From there, it goes along the Schleswig Nature Park via an extensive loop to the state capital Kiel of Schleswig-Holstein. The next major stage goal is Lübeck, from where we proceed through the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park to Hamburg. Behind the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, we hike across parts of the Lüneburg Heath and successively through Celle, past the Steinhuder Meer and further over

Hello dear E1 hiker, I would like to help you so that you can hike the E1 with a tent. In Germany it is banned in nature reserves. But in other areas it is not officially allowed, but it is tolerated. It's best to look for farms or similar when hiking and ask the owners if you can pitch a tent on their property. I live directly on the E1 in Oberkirchen in the Sauerland. When you are here, you can also stay overnight with us (with shower and bed). Another piece of information: you can find the individual stages with lots of information at https://e1.hiking-europe.eu/ You are also welcome to write an email to hubertus@mergheim.de

Bon jour, it's officially allowed in free natur for 1 night, if you are on Tour. I slept outside in nature for more then 50 years and had never never a problem with this. But like mentioned, in Nature Reserves it is forbidden. An other tip: look for alternatives to the E1! It is the fastest, but not the nicest way along this line. Nice tour!
