Der Bannwaldsee liegt am Fuß des Ammergebirges in der herrlichen Landschaft der Allgäuer Alpen. Das Stillgewässer wird fast vollständig von Sumpfwiesen und Schilfgürteln umgeben. Der Bannwaldsee und seine Umgebung sind Naturschutzgebiet (560 ha), was den ökologischen Wert dieses Gebietes unterstreicht. Die Sumpfzone bietet Brutplätze für viele seltene Vogelarten.
Der Bannwaldsee ist aber auch gleichzeitig ein sehr schönes, naturnahes Badegewässer. An seinem Südostufer gibt es einen landschaftlich reizvoll gelegenen Campingplatz. Direkt daneben befindet sich eine Badestelle mit flachem Strand, Liege- und Spielwiesen und einem Kinderspielplatz. Der See hat sehr angenehme Badetemperaturen, so dass Kinder stundenlang im Wasser planschen können.
