Im Jahr 1108 kamen zwölf Benediktinermönche unter dem Schutz des Mainzer Erzbischofs auf den Disibodenberg, um hier, wo der irische Mönche St. Disibod im 6. Jahrhundert eine Klause gehabt hatte, ein neues Kloster aufzubauen. Vier Jahre später war das Gelände noch eine Baustelle, als am Allerheiligentag des Jahres 1112 drei Jungfrauen einzogen, um eine Frauenklause zu begründen. Somit wurde aus dem Männerkloster ein Doppelkloster. Unter der Leitung der 20jährigen Magistra Jutta von Sponheim wurden auch die 14jährige Hildegard und eine weitere Jungfrau als Reklusen, d.h. noch nicht als Nonnen, aufgenommen. Hildegard nahm erst zwei Jahre später (1114) den Schleier. Als Jutta im Jahre 1136 starb, wurde Hildegard ihre Nachfolgerin als Magistra auf dem Disibodenberg. Wiederum fünf Jahre später offenbarte sie ihre Visionen, die sie von Kindheit an gehabt hatte. Nach ihrem eigenen Zeugnis tat sie dies in ihrem 43. Lebensjahr, nachdem sie in einer Vision von Gott dazu beauftragt worden war. Unterstützt vom gelehrten Mönch Volmar begann sie mit dem Verfassen ihres ersten visionären Werkes, dem Liber Scivias. Als nach allgemeiner Kunde Papst Eugen II auf der Synode von Trier (1147-1148) öffentlich aus ihrem Werk vorlas und ihr auftragen ließ, mit dem Verfassen der Schrift fortzufahren, begann der Ruhm Hildegards als Seherin. Die Frauenklause, die bei Juttas Tod bereits zehn Schwestern hatte, wurde aufgrund der zunehmenden Zahl von Postulantinnen immer enger. Die Beschlüsse des Zweiten Laterankonzils (1139) hatten das Leben für Mönche und Nonnen im Doppelkloster auch eingeschränkt. Und nach 40 Jahren auf dem Disibodenberg wollte Hildegard in der Welt wirken. 1150/52 führte sie schließlich ihre Vision der Gründung eines eigenen Frauenklosters nach Bingen am Rhein. Das Grab ihrer Lehrerin Jutta von Sponheim blieb auf dem Disibodenberg, vielleicht am Ort der heutigen Marienkapelle.
