The Violin Making Museum was founded in 1930 and has been housed in one of the most beautiful and oldest houses in Mittenwald since 1960. The exhibition shows the craft of violin making and its development, now over three hundred years old, linked to local history.
The focus of the high-quality and extensive collection of instruments is on baroque Mittenwald violin making. However, the 19th and 20th centuries up to the workshops of the present are of course also presented. Hearing and smelling samples, historical films on the subject of violin making, the historical show workshop and special exhibitions make the visit varied.
Tip: Guided tours of the museum are gladly organised for groups of 10 or more.
Opening times
High season: 01.02. - 15.03., 15.05. - 14.10. and 18.12. - 06.01. between 10:00 and 17:00 Closed on Mondays
Low season: 07.01. - 31.01., 16.03. - 14.05 and 15.10. - 04.11. between 11:00 and 16:00 Closed on Mondays
Closed from 04.11. - 11.12. and on 24.12. and 31.12.
Group visits are also possible outside opening hours by appointment. The guided tours through the museum with demonstrations in the workshop are a special experience.

Mittenwald is easy to reach by car via the A95 motorway. From Munich via Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the direction of Innsbruck.Mittenwald is also easy to reach by Deutsche Bundesbahn. Mittenwald is on the Munich - Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Innsbruck railway line and is served every hour.
