Römberberg Bastion
Enjoy the view over the city down to the Wingertsbergpark.
The restoration and partial reconstruction of the city wall along the Römerberg past the Mühlengasse, at the back of the former town hall to the Gass house is largely completed. Through the purchase and demolition of several houses in the Mühlengasse, parts of the medieval city wall, which dates back to the 14th century, were uncovered and restored.
The city fortifications date back to the 14th century, as Simmern already referred to it as "Veste" in 1323. During the Orleans War in 1689 and the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703, the city wall was completely destroyed. By 1761, the ring wall seemed to be intact again.
Through extensive restoration and reconstruction measures (2015-2020, which also include the area around the Stephanskirche), it has been possible to make this historical part of the city’s history visible and tangible. A part of the wall crown is accessible and offers a beautiful view over the Wingertsbergpark and the surrounding area.
At the upper end of the city wall, you will reach the bastion at Römerberg. With the destruction of the city of Simmern in May and September of the year 1689, the bastion also fell. The corner tower of the former city fortifications, with a round tower dome and window-like openings in the base of the tower, is depicted in the engraving by Merian. The old bastion was accessed via a fear hole in the ceiling, indicating earlier use as a prison. The upper part of the tower served as a guardroom.
