Menhir ist eine ursprünglich bretonische Bezeichnung für einen aufgerichteten mehrere Meter großen Monolithen und bedeutet „langer Stein" (maen = Stein, hir = lang). Im deutschen Sprachraum tragen Menhire seit dem Mittelalter auch die volkstümlich gebräuchliche Bezeichnung Hinkelstein.
Am Menir "Hinkelstein" trafen bis zur Französischen Revolution die Herrschaften Falkenstein, Kurpfalz und Schallodenbach aufeinander. Noch heute ist der mächtige Hinkelstein ein Dreimärkergestein, an dem die Grenzen der Gemeinden Otterberg, Höringen und Heiligenmoschel zusammen treffen. Der 891 in der Römerzeit erstmals urkundlich erwähnte Hinkelstein ist ca. 2,20 Meter hoch und 1,50 Meter breit und wird von zwei behauenen Grenzsteinen flankiert. Eine Sitzgruppe lädt zum Verweilen ein.
