History
Godramstein looks back on over 1250 years of history
The name probably goes back to a Frankish leader named "Godemar". The place was then called "Godmarstaine" and was first mentioned in 767 in connection with the Benedictine monastery of Lorsch. In the Middle Ages, a knight appeared who named himself after his settlement, "Sigewardo von Godramstein".
In the 19th century, political upheavals such as the transfer of the Palatinate to Bavaria, the Hambach Festival, and the Revolution of 1848 shaped the region. For Godramstein, the milling industry played an economically important role, as the yields and duties of the mills could be used and processed directly in the village.
From these rather modest beginnings, a significant industry emerged from the early 19th century, whose former significance can still be recognized today in the building complex of the Kinckschen Mühle.
The Franco-Prussian War brought economically successful years to the mill due to extensive military supplies. However, after World War I, the French occupation and the loss of sales markets in Alsace and in the Saar Palatinate led to significant loss of profits. However, the operation was able to recover by tapping new customers in Baden and Württemberg and eventually developed into the largest inland mill in the Palatinate.
The War Memorial by the sculptor Ludwig Kindler in the village center from the year 1932 commemorates the losses in World War I. Godramstein lost 64 men in this war.
The Second World War hit Godramstein even harder: 114 men fell, and bombing raids damaged parts of the village in 1944, especially Kellereigasse. However, after 1945, there began a upturn with new infrastructure and the settlement of modern companies such as “Remonte Schuhe,” which also brought changes to the village’s appearance, such as the clearing of Landauer Allee in 1963. Gerd Runck wrote in one of his poems about the alley: "Vun Landaach raus, uff Landaach nei', die schäi Allee entlang, durch gold'ne Rääwe - die ganz' Familje war debei!".
Today, Godramstein is one of the attractive residential locations in the region and has a well-developed infrastructure. About 30 historical buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, especially along the main street as well as in Kellereigasse and Bahnhofstraße, are protected as monuments.
